Georg Nussbaumer’s sound installation is a commission from the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna for the Musikverein Festival ‘Beethovens Spazierstock’. It is based exclusively on the sounds of walking sticks, recorded during walks on various surfaces. The nine audio tracks – each created whilst listening to a Beethoven symphony – play as loops of varying lengths and, when layered, form a constantly shifting tapestry of sound.
Georg Nussbaumer (born 1964) lives in Vienna and is regarded as a virtuoso of the Gesamtkunstwerk, whose work spans composition, installation art, performance and theatre.
The work, commissioned by the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde especially for the festival, can be heard in the Durchfahrt on the following dates:
18, 21, 25, 28, 29 April & 2 May 2026.
