Statement of use

The concert archive contains the majority of concert programs and program notes, which are preserved in the archive's program collection. The oldest programs date back to 1771, the most recent to yesterday. This collection is searchable.
Were you at the concert in the Brahms Hall last week and would like to know what was played as an encore or the pianist's name? Or perhaps you attended a concert two years ago with the famous conductor and are wondering which orchestra he conducted? The easiest way to find concerts is by searching by date. If you remember the names of the conductor, orchestra, or soloist, you can enter one or more names in the "Performer" field, such as "Vienna Symphony Orchestra" or "Harnoncourt".

Example 1

I'm looking for a concert where Leonard Bernstein performed Beethoven with the Vienna Philharmonic. In the "Performer" field, enter "Vienna Philharmonic Bernstein" and in the "Composer" field, enter "Beethoven".

Example 2

I want to know what was performed on the artistic director's birthday. I'll enter his birthday in both the "Start Date" and "End Date" fields.

Note

The "Goldene Saal" is always referred to as the "Große Saal" in the concert database, and searching for specific works is only possible if you enter the exact title. However, opera excerpts can easily be found by searching for the opera's title.

The concert database has some peculiarities in its data structure.

From 1771 to 30.06.1880

All programs are documented with digital images and metadata. This means that images can be accessed online, containing information about the location, date and start time, program schedule, composers, organizers, and performers. This data is recorded and searchable.

From 01.07.1880 to 31.08.1924

All programs are cataloged with digital copies, but the metadata is only entered in abbreviated form. You can search for each concert by date, location, and organizer, but the fields "Performer," "Composer," and "Work" are usually missing. The principal performer, orchestra, or concert title can sometimes be found in the "Keyword" field.

From 01.09.1924 until today

All programs are cataloged with digital copies, but the metadata is only entered in abbreviated form. You can search for each concert by date, location, and organizer, but the fields "Performer," "Composer," and "Work" are usually missing. The principal performer, orchestra, or concert title can sometimes be found in the "Keyword" field.

Yes and no. Firstly, it should be noted that these are programmes from the programme collection. Until 1924, all programmes in the collection were recorded, including those that had no connection with the Musikverein. Concert programmes in estates or in separate lists were not recorded, such as the programmes from the estate of violin virtuoso Marie Soldat-Roeger or the programmes from the Bösendorfer Hall.
