Sustainability is a key concern for the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien throughout the year. The aim is to organise concerts in the building in a resource-efficient manner and to continuously reduce its ecological footprint. Climate protection is already considered standard practice in the construction of new buildings – but how can a historic building dating from 1870 contribute to protecting the environment and climate? We have addressed this question intensively, and as a result of these efforts, the Musikverein has been awarded the Austrian Ecolabel. The Musikverein uses 100% green electricity throughout the year, energy-efficient lighting and optimised heating and cooling systems. Throughout the season, visitors are informed about sustainable travel options and environmentally conscious behaviour via the website and a QR code on site. Together with environmentally certified partners and suppliers, we are committed to the responsible use of resources – for a sustainable and liveable future.

In its programme focus ‘Focus on Climate: Zero?’, the Musikverein goes one step further: the aim is to organise events in accordance with the criteria of the Austrian Ecolabel for Green Meetings/Events. This certification is awarded to events that implement special measures to be as climate-friendly as possible. In ‘Focus on Climate: ZERO?’, environmental standards are implemented particularly consistently – for example, through the most environmentally friendly production of all printed materials in terms of resource consumption and paper quality, through efficient energy management and a structured waste management concept, and through even more regional, seasonal and organic products in catering, preferably from fair trade. Food and beverages are served exclusively in reusable tableware.
